Opening the Room: Why These Moments Matter

Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum.
An opening keynote slot (my favorite)
A room full of advocates and allies.

Honestly… a perfect event.

Last Friday, I had the honor of opening the DDNC 2026 Developmental Disability and Neurodiversity Conference, hosted by Special Care Services. And from the moment I rolled in, I could feel it, this wasn’t just another conference.

This was a room rooted in purpose.

Wide view of the DDNC conference room filled with attendees watching Alycia’s keynote presentation.

More Than a Conversation

There’s something different about spaces like this.

Where disability, neurodiversity, and advocacy aren’t just topics on an agenda but lived, understood, and actively being moved forward.

You could feel it in the room.

Not just in the conversations, but in the energy.
In the people showing up not out of obligation but out of commitment.

Because inclusion doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens when people choose it.

And this room was full of people choosing it.

The Power of Representation and Connection

One of the highlights for me? Connecting with Dani Bowman yes, that Dani Bowman ⭐️

And beyond the moment itself, it was a reminder of something bigger:

How powerful it is to be in spaces where disability is visible.
Where it’s valued.
Where it’s leading.

Those moments matter more than we often realize.

Because for so long, those rooms didn’t exist in the way they do now.
And now, they’re not just existing, they’re evolving.

These are the conversations I continue beyond the stage on my podcast.

Why This Work Matters to Me

Every time I step onto a stage, especially to open a room like this—I carry more than just a message.

I carry a lifetime of perspective.
Of navigating, adapting, advocating, and learning.

Not from the outside looking in…
but from lived experience.

And I don’t share my story to inspire from a distance.

I share it to connect.
To challenge.
To invite people into a different way of seeing and leading.

Let’s Build More Spaces Like This

I left this event feeling energized, grateful, and deeply aligned with the work ahead.

We need more rooms like this.
More conversations like this.
More action like this.

And if you’re building events, conferences, or experiences centered on leadership, inclusion, disability, or belonging…

I’d love to be part of it.

Let’s keep moving this work forward, together.
