“We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For”

That was the t-shirt theme at last week’s Montana Youth Transition Conference and it became our rallying cry. Because when youth, families, educators, and providers come together, we don’t wait for change. We are the change.

Community in Action

I was honored to keynote this incredible gathering in Montana. Being in community with disabled youth, their parents, and the allies supporting their transition from school to college or the workplace was pure joy and pure momentum. We learned, we connected, and yes… we danced together at the masquerade party. 🎭

A Moment I’ll Never Forget

My favorite moment? One brave Deaf student joined me on stage to sign and share her story. That single act captured the power of representation: when young people see themselves reflected in leadership, they think, “If she can do it, I can do it too.” That spark becomes self-advocacy, bold dreams, and the confidence to claim their place in every room.

With Gratitude to Marty

None of this happens without Marty by my side every step of the way. He’s the calm behind the scenes: running tech, managing the stage, supporting the business, and steadying my nerves so the joy can shine through. I could never do this work without him, and I’m endlessly grateful.

Why This Matters

Transitions are more than logistics they’re identity, opportunity, and belonging. When systems and communities meet young people with access, encouragement, and real pathways, they don’t just participate they thrive. The impact is immediate: stronger voices, clearer goals, and a belief that their future is theirs to shape.

Thank You, Montana

To the organizers, providers, families, and especially the youth: thank you. Your energy turned a conference into a movement. Those t-shirts said it best: we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Keep the Momentum

Let’s keep showing up for each other, speaking up, and opening doors. When community unites, the future doesn’t arrive by accident, we build it, together.
