Happy New Year, friends!
As the clock struck midnight, ushering in 2025, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come together in our journey toward a more inclusive and equitable world. From the boardrooms where I’ve shared my story, to the conference stages that have amplified our voices, to the countless conversations with changemakers like you — each moment has been a step toward creating a society where everyone belongs.
But our work isn’t done. A new year brings new opportunities to push boundaries, challenge biases, and break down barriers. Together, we have the power to shape a future where diversity is celebrated and inclusion is second nature.
As we set our intentions for 2025, let’s embrace the momentum we’ve built and commit to taking actionable steps toward lasting change. Here are some ways you can join me in making inclusion a reality this year:
1. Educate Yourself and Others
Knowledge is power. Take the time to learn about different disabilities, cultures, and lived experiences. Share what you learn with others to foster understanding and empathy. Let’s turn curiosity into compassion.
2. Challenge Ableism
Call out stereotypes, challenge assumptions, and address biases wherever you see them. It’s uncomfortable but necessary. Change begins with accountability.
3. Advocate for Accessible Spaces
Accessibility isn’t just about ramps and elevators; it’s about creating spaces that everyone can navigate and enjoy. Whether it’s your workplace, local businesses, or community events, advocate for accessibility in all its forms.
4. Support Inclusive Hiring Practices
If you’re an employer or leader, make disability inclusion a priority in your hiring processes. Reach out to organizations that specialize in connecting talent with disabilities to meaningful career opportunities. Representation matters.
5. Be an Ally
Speak up for inclusion even when it doesn’t directly impact you. Use your voice to amplify marginalized voices and your privilege to open doors for others.
6. Celebrate Diversity
Take time to honor and celebrate the diverse talents, perspectives, and contributions of people with disabilities. Whether it’s at work, in your community, or on social media, shine a spotlight on the amazing work being done.
7. Create Opportunities for Connection
Inclusion thrives when we connect as humans. Build relationships, foster dialogue, and create safe spaces where everyone feels valued and heard.
8. Get Involved
Join local or national disability advocacy organizations. Volunteer your time, donate resources, or simply spread the word about their initiatives. Every bit helps.
This year, let’s make inclusion more than a buzzword — let’s make it a movement. Together, we can create a world where differences are celebrated, and barriers are replaced with bridges.
As I always say, our diversities are not our deficits. They’re our strengths. They’re what make us uniquely qualified and able in life. Let’s continue to open minds to a world of possibility.
Wishing you a year filled with growth, connection, and purpose. Let’s make 2025 the year we change the world, one step at a time.
