Just returned from an incredible trip to Michigan, where I had the honor of speaking at two amazing events on Monday, August 19th. My day started bright and early at Saginaw Valley State University, where I spoke to the dedicated educators of Bay-Arenac ISD for their 2024 Opening Day event. The energy in Curtis Hall was palpable as I delivered my “Heart of Inclusion” keynote speech, sharing insights on allyship and the importance of creating inclusive environments for every student.

Bay-Arenac ISD’s commitment to improving student achievement and supporting individual needs truly aligns with my message, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with such passionate educators. Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District, based in Bay City, Michigan, provides critical special education services to its local school districts and offers a Career Tech Center for students. The diverse staff — including teachers, therapists, psychologists, office professionals, administrators, custodians, social workers, mental health counselors, and math/science/literacy coaches — embodies a holistic approach to education. It was an honor to share this moment with a community so deeply invested in creating an equitable learning environment.

After wrapping up at SVSU, I hit the road to Pinconning, Michigan, where I spoke to the incredible Middle School and High School teachers in their gymnasium. It was such an inspiring experience to address a group of educators who are so dedicated to empowering students to succeed and guiding them toward new possibilities. The values of “Every Student, Every Day” resonated deeply with me, and I left Pinconning with a full heart, knowing that these educators are making a real difference in their students’ lives.

Traveling from Sacramento, California, to Michigan for these events was an absolute privilege. The dedication and passion I witnessed in both communities reaffirmed the importance of the work we are doing together to promote inclusivity in every corner of education. I’m excited to see the continued impact of the conversations we started and the connections we built. Here’s to building more inclusive spaces where every student can thrive!

Thank you to everyone who made this trip unforgettable — especially the educators, administrators, and support staff of Bay-Arenac ISD and Pinconning Middle and High Schools. Your commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students is truly inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of your journey toward greater inclusivity. I look forward to the next chapter in our shared mission!
