Coming Together Across Time Zones for IDPWD
Today, I had the privilege of joining Konecranes for their global Disability Inclusion Day “Coffee and Culture” webinar in honor of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). Even across continents and time zones, the energy, curiosity, and commitment from the Konecranes team created a sense of connection and shared purpose from the moment we began.
IDPWD is a meaningful global observance—one that recognizes the value, contributions, and lived experiences of disabled people around the world. It was inspiring to see Konecranes embrace this day not just as a date on the calendar, but as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and strengthen their culture of inclusion.
From a Simple Inquiry to a Thoughtful, Collaborative Conversation
This event began with a straightforward booking request through my website asking for a short 30-minute recorded message with some Q&A. What followed was a genuinely collaborative journey. Over the past several weeks, Mara Zavagno and I worked closely to turn that initial idea into a meaningful, interactive conversation that aligned with Konecranes’ mission and culture.
Mara’s dedication to shaping an experience that felt relevant, authentic, and impactful was evident every step of the way. Today’s successful session was a direct reflection of her effort, her heart, and the broader commitment of the Konecranes team. Hearing leaders say they hope to organize another session like this one speaks volumes about the value they place on continued learning and growth.
A Conversation Rooted in Inclusion, Culture, and Human-Centered Leadership
Our discussion focused on understanding disability as a natural part of human diversity—visible, invisible, congenital, acquired—and how these experiences show up in workplace culture. We explored the importance of recognizing ableism, rethinking outdated concepts of “normal,” and creating environments where every employee can bring their full identity and strengths to the table.
Key themes resonated throughout the dialogue:
- The importance of language, representation, and awareness
- The power of everyday allyship and small intentional actions
- The role of disabled lived experience in driving innovation
- How neurodiversity enriches teams and expands creativity
- The responsibility leaders have in shaping accessible, inclusive cultures
Konecranes’ willingness to dive into these topics with openness and curiosity reflects a strong organizational commitment to equity and cultural growth.
Carrying the Momentum Forward
What stood out most today was not just the questions asked, but the thoughtful way Konecranes approached this learning moment—as an investment in their people and their culture. This is the kind of effort that builds long-term impact, strengthens belonging, and helps organizations thrive.
As I move through the rest of my engagements today—including a session with Uber, participating in the CDI Insurance Diversity Task Force quarterly meeting, and preparing tonight’s podcast episode—I carry with me the sense of optimism and partnership that Konecranes created this morning. Their approach is a reminder of what is possible when companies lean fully into conversations about diversity and inclusion.
