On Friday, July 19, 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to deliver my “Heart of Inclusion” keynote at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. The experience was both inspiring and eye-opening, as I was welcomed with open arms by a team ready to explore the nuances of disability inclusion together in celebration of Disability Pride Month.
Even before I began my keynote, the team started sharing their personal stories about how they identify with disability in their own lives, which continued into the Q&A session. I was blown away by their openness right from the start! Their willingness to share their experiences signaled a readiness and excitement to delve into the topic of disability together.
Self-identification is never required and is always a personal choice, but when leaders, teams, and organizations create a safe space for employees to openly discuss their disabilities or caregiving experiences, it helps break down many stigmas and fears that might prevent others from sharing, connecting, and collaborating. This kind of environment signals to employees that they are valued and that their perspectives matter.
What a cool experience! Thanks so much for having me, Bianca J. and Team! It was a great way to celebrate Disability Pride Month by sharing who we are.
If you have ever flown out of JFK, biked across the George Washington Bridge, or captured that perfect picture of the World Trade Center, then you have witnessed just some of what The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey does. For almost 100 years, the Port Authority has been designing, engineering, and operating the transportation infrastructure that moves people and goods to, from, and throughout one of the most economically competitive and culturally vibrant regions in the world. Whether fortifying the tunnels under the Hudson River to withstand future super storms or raising a bridge so larger cargo vessels can reach the premier port on the East Coast, their nearly 7,000 employees are committed to their work, moving millions of people and supporting billions of dollars in economic activity each year.
The Port Authority embraces a workplace where the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion support varying perspectives and backgrounds, producing an environment where all employees can contribute and feel valued. The Workforce Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (WDEI) team ensures that this standard is met daily. They also support ten Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs), including the Port Authority Abilities Network (PAAN), which aims to create an inclusive work environment that values, respects, and embraces employees for their abilities.
The Port Authority’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with their dedication to providing opportunities for minorities, women, veterans, and small entrepreneurs, creates an atmosphere where diverse individuals and businesses can fully participate and maximize their contributions.
I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their ongoing efforts and to help celebrate Disability Pride Month with such a dedicated and forward-thinking organization.
